Giants earn split in Prince George

Western Hockey League-leading Portland Winterhawks up next for Giants as teams play Dec. 5 at Langley Events Centre

A weekend road trip to Prince George earned the Vancouver Giants two out of four points.

The Giants got the two-game set off on the right foot thanks to a 5-3 win on Friday night over the Cougars at the CN Centre, but Prince George exacted revenge the following night, dumping the Vancouver visitors 6-2.

The split helps Vancouver (12-13-2-2, 28 points) maintain a four-point lead over Prince George (10-14-2-2, 24 points) in the B.C. Division. The Giants sit third and the Cougars fifth.

Giants captain Tyler Benson led the way in the first game with two goals and three points as he scored for the third consecutive game. Milos Roman, Ty Ronning and James Malm had the other goals while David Tendeck made 32 saves in goal.

Vancouver was looking for a third straight win the next night but were limited to a pair of goals, both from Brad Morrison, in the 6-2 defeat. Todd Scott took the loss, allowing all six goals on 34 shots.

The Giants have won two of their past three games but are 5-5 in their last 10 and things don’t get much easier over the next two weeks.

Vancouver begins a home-and-home series with the Portland Winterhawks, the top team in the WHL at 20-5-0-1.

The teams play on Dec. 5 at the Langley Events Centre as part of Pyjama Night where fans are encouraged to come to the game in the PJs and also to donate a pair of new pyjamas for children or teens. The collected pyjamas will be donated to the Langley Christmas Bureau.

They wrap up the series with a game in Portland on Dec. 8 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The Giants then host the Kootenay Ice on Dec. 9 before a home-and-home series with the B.C. Division-leading — and second place team in the WHL’s Western Conference — Victoria Royals (18-10-3-0) on Dec. 15 and 16.

Vancouver’s final game before the holiday break is Dec. 17 against the Cougars on Teddy Bear Toss night.
