Two down. Two to go.

That’s how the Comox Valley Glacier Kings first round Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League playoffs with the Saanich Braves stands.

The North Division champion Yetis decimated the Saanich Braves (South Island #5) 7-2 Thursday night at the George Pearkes Sports Centre to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven series. Game three goes Saturday night in Courtenay, with game time 7:30 p.m. at Comox Valley Sports Centre Arena #1.

The Icemen led 3-1 after one period and 6-2 after two.

In other news, G-Kings defence man and assistant captain Derian Hamilton has been named the VIJJHL Player the Week. The league website notes Hamilton picked up eight points in four games last week. “With just two seconds remaining on the clock in overtime Derian scored the winner to clinch the North Division title for his team. Derian leads all defence men in the league in goals scored (with eight).

“Derian, who is a leader both on and off the ice, has a tremendous work ethic. He is well respected by his teammates, coaching staff and owners. Derian was named in the three-star selection for two of the four games (last week).”

The 19-year-old from Port McNeill has also played with the Nanaimo Buccaneers this year.
