This coming weekend will see a whole new aspiring crop of Comox Valley Glacier Kings prospects, with lots of local participation.
The Courtenay-based Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League team is holding their pre-season main camp at Sports Centre Arena #2. “We are still accepting registrations to top up the rosters of four small teams,” said team owner Marsha Webb. “We can accept up to four more goalies, eight defence men and 12 forwards.”
Webb notes this is an opportunity for some players to make the team and for others to gain valuable pre-season experience and exposure. The camp will consist of players born in 1993 to 1998.
The camp format will include scrimmage games on Aug. 16, 17, 18 and a practice session on Saturday, Aug. 17.
Registration check-in will commence at 4:30 p.m on Friday, Aug. 16 and exit interviews will be included on Sunday, Aug. 18.
Camp registration forms are available on the team’s website at www.glacierkings.ca (under downloads).
“This is also an opportunity for the public to get a sneak peek and to meet this year’s coaching staff,” Webb added.
The Yetis team training camp (by invite only) goes Aug. 30 to Sept. 1 at the Sports Centre. The Icemen have two pre-season exhibition games with the Oceanside Generals. They play Aug. 30 in Parksville then host their North Division rivals on Sept. 1 in a 1:45 p.m. start at the Sports Centre.
The Glacier Kings open the 2013-14 regular season Sept. 5 in Victoria against the defending league champion Cougars. Their home opener is Sept. 7 against the Camapbell River Storm.
