Golden goaltender returns to the hometown hockey team

In the first season in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, Cody Boeckman has found his way back to Golden.

The 18-year-old goalie is once again calling Golden home after spending  the season playing for the Nelson Leafs.

“I was really happy. I heard I was going to be moved, and when I was told I was going to Golden I was excited,” he said.

When the news came down that Nelson had picked up a new net minder, Boeckman never figured this is how the deal would work out.

“Nope not at all. We (Nelson) traded for a guy from Kamloops so I assumed I would be going there. Then I walked in and they said I was going to Golden instead, which was great,” he said.

Boeckman grew up playing hockey in Golden, and has some great memories from that time.

“I moved away when I was 13. I was a Ram when we won the provincial tournament in 2005-2006 in Pee Wee. I have some good memories here,” he said.

Boeckman still has a few relatives in the area and has enjoyed coming back to the town.

“It is different being with a new team. They seem like good guys so I think it is going very well.”

Many players do not have the chance to play on two of the top teams in any league in the same year, and this fact has not been lost on Boeckman.

“I was happy that happened. It definitely doesn’t happen very often, so to get that chance is great and I appreciate it a lot.”

As for his own goals for the rest of the season, Boeckman is hoping he can do everything he can to help the Rockets win.
