Golf clinics for kids at Surrey courses in June and July

Free Ford Go Golf! clinic at Hazelmere, followed by Canucks Junior Golf camps

SURREY — Kids can soon get driving – and chipping and putting – on local golf courses at a number of clinics, including Canucks-backed camps.

First up is the free Ford Go Golf! clinic at South Surrey’s Hazelmere Golf & Tennis Club, on Sunday, June 11 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The annual event, presented by Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour and Dams Ford Lincoln, welcomes boys and girls aged six to 12. Registration is required; email erin_heutink@dams.net, call 604-532-9921 or visit maplejt.com for details.

A few weeks later, several courses in Surrey play host to Canucks Junior Golf Week events from July 2 to 9. More than 40 single-day camps will be held across B.C. that week, for kids aged five to 18.

In Surrey, camps will be held on July 5 at Birdies & Buckets Family Golf Centre (1 p.m. start), July 7 at Morgan Creek Golf Course (9:30 a.m.), July 7 at Birdies & Buckets (1 p.m.), July 7 at Northview Golf Academy (4:30 p.m.), July 8 at Eaglequest Coyote Creek (10 a.m.), July 8 at Northview (5:30 p.m.) and July 9 at Eaglequest Coyote Creek (10 a.m.).

golf clinic“This is our fourth summer partnering with the Vancouver Canucks on this program, which was designed to encourage kids to keep active during hockey’s offseason,” Eric MacKenzie, the PGA of B.C.’s communications and marketing manager, told the Now-Leader.

“Since the initiative started in 2014, nearly 2,000 British Columbia youth have participated in our camps and the majority had no previous golf experience,” he added. “We very much welcome newcomers to the sport.”

The fee to attend a Canucks Junior Golf camp is $20, plus GST, and includes instruction from a PGA of BC Professional, rental equipment if required, and take-home gifts that include an item of apparel branded with the Canucks logo. Registration is open until June 22 via the website canucks.com/golfweek.
