Golf course about ready to open

Looking for another sign of spring? If the disappearing snow and first farmers market wasn’t enough, over at the golf course, people were getting in their first swings of the summer at the local course when the Revelstoke Golf Club opened its driving range last weekend.

Looking for another sign of spring? If the disappearing snow and first farmers market wasn’t enough, over at the golf course, people were getting in their first swings of the summer at the local course when the Revelstoke Golf Club opened its driving range last weekend.

“Winter’s still hanging in there but we’re hoping another couple of weeks and we’ll have the range open this weekend so at least we’ll get some practice in,” said course manager John Franks in an interview last week. “We just need some more heat and rain.”

He said the course may open this weekend if it stays warm and dry. If not, it would open the next weekend.

“We’ll probably open with a little bit of snow on the edges – that’s been done before,” said Franks. “If everything goes according to plan, maybe a couple weeks max.”

Dwayne Haaf, who was at the driving range practising his swing on Saturday, said he had been to the driving range in Vernon a few times already this year.

“It’s nicer to be at home and do it here,” he said between swings.

The golf club is hosting several demo days this week and the Spring team events are scheduled for May 14 (men’s) and May 15 (ladies’).

The following is a list of tournaments and events at the club this summer:

The city’s sports fields are expected to open up for play over the coming days. Parks foreman Dave Manson said the Queen Elizabeth Park field should be open this week, with Centennial Park to follow.

He said minor soccer, minor ball and slo-pitch were expected to start up next week.
