Despite the rain, the Salmon Arm Tennis Club got through all but four matches during the 2012 Closed Tournament on June 15 to 17.

Ladies’ A singles:  1st place – Shannon Hecker; 2nd place Antje Breugem – very long rallies were featured in this final match.

Ladies’ A doubles:  1st place – Loree Boyd and Cynthia Langford; 2nd place – Shannon Hecker and Marianne VanBuskirk – high calibre quick-pace tennis; this match was very close and went to a three-set tie-breaker. This match featured the top two seeded ladies’ teams in the club.

Ladies’ B doubles:  1st place – Sue Ford and Shirley Knorr; 2nd place – Indira Greenhough and Diana Inselberg. This match, despite a rain delay between the two sets, was completed due to perseverance of the four competitors.

Men’s B Singles:  1st place – Ian McHarg; 2nd place – Chad Hare.  McHarg dominated play by consistently ending long rallies with some accurate shots down the line.

Men’s A doubles:  1st place – Detlef Doose and Robin Wiens; 2nd place Alan Harrison and Winston Pain. This feature match was a spectator’s favourite as incredible acrobatics and very long rallies dominated each game.

Many volunteers (under the supervision of tournament director Doug Rawson) helped to make the event possible. Club president Marianne VanBuskirk noted how proud she is to be part of the club.

“This was one of our biggest draws of local participants, which featured some very high-calibre tennis. Despite extreme rain, the club’s volunteers pulled together to continue with the tournament to make it a highlight of the 2012 season.”
