Greater Trail Gymnasts excel at Zones

The Greater Trail Gymnastics Club had plenty of podium appearances at the Zone 1 championship in Nelson earlier this month.

The Trail Gymnastic Club competed at the Zone Championships earlier this month in Nelson with an excellent showing from all participants.

In Junior Olympic levels 1-3 category, the team finished third overall, with Emmie Ihas capturing first overall in JO 3 (2004-07). Ihas had a second place showing on vault, bars, and beam, while Rannde Wyatt finished second overalll with a first in vault and floor, and a third in beam. Jasmine Wyatt came fifth all around with first place performance in bars, and third on the floor. In JO level 2 (2007-08), Ellery Shields finished fifth with a fourth place on bars and floor.

The JO level 2 and 3’s put on a great performance in their respective levels showing their improvement in form, poise and body control that they have been working hard on throughout the season,” said Trail Gymnastics coach Nicola Marynowski. “They are hard at work trying to master the skills they need to advance to the next level.”

In JO level 6, for 12-13 year olds, Jendaya Shields finished seventh overall, with a good performance on beam. Jendaya recently represented the Trail Gymnastics Club on the Zone 1 Level 6 team at Provincial Championships in Langley last month.

It was a great learning experience for her to compete on a bigger stage against the top level 6’s in the province,” said Marynowski. “This is her first full season competing at level 6 which requires a higher degree of difficulty and she has had to learn many new skills this season including kips and free hip circles on bars.”

In the High School Level 1 competition, Katie Aiken claimed third all around with a second place finish on Bars, and first on floor.

In HS Level 2 Reigha Wyatt topped the podium capturing first in bars and beam and third in vault, while Pauline Seib took home second all around with a first on floor and a second on bars. Claire Conliffe completed the podium sweep with third all around, coming third on beam and floor and fourth on bars. Anna Anhel, Charlotte Gibson and Nicole Smith finished fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively with Annhel receiving her first ever 9’s at the competition on bars and floor. The HS team finished third all around.

The Interclub girls team, made up of Sofia Olson, Jaden Hlusak, Julia Macasso, Veiga Strachan, Alexys Jones, Maddox Holliday, and Kali Koshey, is starting to really polish its performances, making huge improvements this year. Maddox Holliday received kudos from her coach for competing her tuck-on and long hang pullover for the first time.

Performance Plus goes to Sarah McFarlane AA Gold, and Olivya Teasdale AA Gold, added Marynowski, with special mentions to both Sarah and Olivya for competing their long hang pullovers by themselves.

The teams competed on Saturday in Castlegar at the inaugural Kootenay Cup hosted by Selkirk Challengers Gymnastics Club but results were unavailable. They will compete in Kimberley over the final weekend of May at the Coconut Cup.
