Having suffered through a gestational period similar to an elephant’s would have had most Forestry Hockey League teams tapping out for good.
Not the Green Giants who have somehow risen like a phoenix with their latest victory, 6-4 over Black, setting an example for all FHL teams.
Leading by example at both ends of the ice was Chad “Hercules” Swanson who scored once and added three assists to give him seven points the last two weeks.
Chipping in with his usual annoying flair was Russ “Newton” Young who scored once and assisted on another as Brad “Pumpernickel” Powell, playing like a modern day Dana Murzyn, added two assists.
Replying for Black, who are now only three points clear of Red for the league lead, was Lee “Stormrider” Naeth with a goal and two helpers as “Silent” Seth Phillips scored a pair which included an end to end whimsical beauty.
The other contest saw White put in a solid half before crumbling under the deluge known as the Red Tide of Destruction.
The 5-2 Red victory appeared to be anyone’s game as it was tied at one when the Zamboni hit the ice.
With fresh ice, Red’s young legs and lungs took over.
Scoring the first two for his team was Red’s Kevin “Commando” Hesslegrave who cashed in after some terrific spade work from his line mates and some poor rebound control from the White tender.
Scoring what proved to be the winner was either Mike “Gumby” Ingram’s skate, elbow or noggin as he sacrificed his and other skaters bodies to notch his second and third tallies of the season.
Not to be outdone by his long-limbed friend was Ian “Heartbreaker” Hannah who scored once and added a pair of assists as “Hairy” Kerry Fitzgerald earned a pair of helpers himself.
Replying for White who have only two wins in their past 10 was the vertically challenged but dynamic duo of Todd “The Body” Gryschuk and Troy “Ounce of” McMillan.
