Grizzlies knock off top dogs at tourney

The G.W. Graham senior boys basketball team continued their climb to the top of the AA provincial rankings with a strong showing at last weekend’s Brentwood College Countdown to the Playoffs basketball tournament.

Facing a field full of top ranked teams, the Grizzlies started off with an international friendly versus a Turkish squad from Istanbul.

The Grizzlies weren’t all that friendly, thumping the visitors 81-53.

Game two matched the fifth-ranked Grizzlies against Victoria’s Lambrick Park, the top ranked AA school in the province.

G.W. Graham shocked the Lions, coming away with an 88-83 win.

In game three, the Grizzlies emerged with a 70-59 win over third-ranked Southridge (South Surrey).

Advancing to the tournament final, G.W. Graham’s guys finally ran out of gas, dropping a 68-52 decision to Surrey’s Holy Cross regional high school.

Lucas Mannes and Fran Armengual were named to the tournament first all-star team.

It was a long emotional weekend for the boys, with some great results,” said GWG coach Jake Mouritzen. “We just ran out of gas when we got to the final. The boys left everything they had out on the court.”

The Grizzlies look to remain unbeaten in league play as they head into the playoffs.
