The GSS Senior Girls basketball team is half way through their season and here are the results. On December 3-4 the Golden Eagles played in Armstrong finishing in first place beating all three teams, A.L. Fortune from Enderby 81-34, Host team Pleasant Valley Secondary School 64-26 and Revelstoke Secondary School 53-38.
On December 10-11 Golden held its home tournament again finishing first defeating PVSS (Armstrong) 56-24, Prince Charles Secondary (Creston) 76-22 and David Thompson Secondary (Invermere) 59-33. Cranbrook was the site of a couple of games before the Christmas break. Three tournaments in a row combined with a very physical opponent in Catholic Central from Lethbridge resulted in Golden’s first loss of the season by more than a few touchdowns. Golden also played Kootenay rivals LVR Bombers leading 12-9 after one quarter and 30-22 at the half. Golden only trailed once in the game in the third quarter 38-37 before eventually beating the Nelson team by 10 points at the final buzzer.
The New Year began with the Eagles playing in the Canmore Rockies Classic January 7-8 defeating Strathmore 63-59 and Canmore 47-33. The Eagles won the right to play the mighty George McDougall Lady Mustangs in the finals. The Mustangs were ranked third overall in Alberta Triple A schools and had scored 127 points to beat Sundre to get to the finals against Golden. The game began with the Lady Mustangs trying to establish a full court press on the Eagles ball carriers but to no avail.
The Eagles superb ball skills and fast breaks broke the press within minutes and the score was 16-11 after the first quarter. At three minutes till half time the score was 22-22. The constant run and gun game began to wear down the short bench of the Golden team. Running out of time-outs and unable to slow the pace of the Mustangs attack Coach Bill Sadler had to play his inexperienced bench players to relieve the overworked starters. Fatigue and foul trouble began to take a toll on Golden’s defence and offence as well.
The score was 55-40 at the start of the fourth quarter and the Mustangs ran off to finish the game 84-46.
