Harbour City hosting roller derby doubleheader

The Harbour City Rollers host a doubleheader this Saturday (May 13) at the Nanaimo Ice Centre

Even if they’re nerds, everyone who comes to check out roller derby is cool.

The Harbour City Rollers are getting ready to host their only home bouts of the season, a doubleheader event this Saturday (May 13) called Revenge of the Derbs.

“It’s going to be awesome and everyone should be there,” said Darlene (Dar the Star) Stevens, Rollers player. “It is the Revenge of the Derbs, preps versus nerds … so come dressed as your favourite nerd.”

The Rollers’ Hydras co-ed team will take on a Victoria co-ed team, then the Rollers’ Ship Rex women’s team will take on the Victoria Eves of Destruction Hard Cores in the main event.

The Hydras are coming off a nail-biting 144-141 win down the Malahat earlier this month, while the Ship Rex suffered a closely contested loss in their most recent game up in the Comox Valley.

Stevens said the Rollers have some high-level roller derby talent this season.

“Definitely. Our rookies this year have stepped up and they’re taking the track by storm,” she said. “We’re going to have a team to compete with this year, for sure.”

GAME ON … Saturday’s roller derby doubleheader takes place at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. The first bout is at 5:30 p.m. with the main event at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10, or free for children under 10 years old.
