The Harbour City Rollers rolled over the competition in their home opener.
The Rollers defeated the Vancouver Bad Reputations by a 214-141 score on Saturday night in roller derby action at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.
“There was a lot of pressure on. We kind of wanted to show Nanaimo what roller derby’s all about,” said Kari (Kariac Arrest) Barker, one of the jammers on the rollers.
Both teams played hard and the Bad Reps were tough, but the Harbour City team was faster and more physical. The Rollers also made the most of their power jam opportunities when Bad Reps jammers were penalized.
“I think we did awesome. We’ve been working a lot on sticking together, keeping calm…” Barker said. “Blockers working with the jammers was one of our plans and we’ve been working on that a lot lately and I think we used that to our advantage in this game.”
GAME ON … The Rollers are planning two more home bouts this season, with doubleheaders slated for June 25 and July 2. Look for more on those events in future issues of the News Bulletin.
