Harris scores key goal in Cougars’ weekend winner

108 Mile hockey players notches first two season with Cariboo Cougars major midgets

The BC Hockey Major Midget League (BCMML) Cariboo Cougars, with 100 Mile House forward Brett Harris, snuffed the fire in the Thompson Blazers on the weekend, making off with a home-ice sweep.

On Nov. 11, the Cougars, who are centred in Prince George, out-played the Blazers for a 5-2 victory at the Kinsmen Community Complex arena in Prince George and then followed up on Saturday morning with a 4-3 victory.

Two of Saturday’s goals came from Harris and they were his first of the season after sitting out for five weeks with a shoulder injury. His second marker came on a power play in the third period and proved to be the game winner.

Harris, a Cougars assistant captain, says he was happy he could contribute a couple of goals.

“It felt nice to get them towards a win for the team and it feels great to be back on the ice. My shoulder is holding up nice and there’s no problems with it so far.”

Harris adds he’s still getting the feel of being on the ice, but it’s coming.

The Cougars are currently in first place in the BCMML standings with a season record of 10-4-2. They have some time off and will be back in action on Nov. 26 against the South Island Thunderbirds in Victoria.

BC Hockey and Hockey Alberta announced their 22-player roster that will represent Team Pacific at the 2012 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge, Dec. 29 – Jan. 2012 in Windsor, Ont. on Nov. 15.

Harris had been short-listed for the team earlier, but his name was not on the final list.

Contenders were identified during a summer camp and further evaluations were based on regular season play with their home club. Harris injured himself at his first game of the season and did not return to the ice until Oct. 29.
