The new Hatzic Middle School football program finally got its first win in Grade 8 football action, and it was a big one.
Hatzic defeated Heritage Park 20-6 in the second annual Sturgeon Cup battle of Mission middle schools.
The opening kickoff was returned 71 yards for a touchdown by Hatzic’s Saxon Kernahan, and Hatzic never looked back.
After a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Bucholz to Ethan Gailey, and another Kernahan rushing major, Hatzic led 20-0 in the first half.
The second half was mostly a defensive struggle, with Heritage Park scoring a long touchdown on a trick play for the squad’s only score.
“It’s a unique situation where the players are opponents this year, but will be teammates at MSS next year,” said Hatzic coach Glen Roberts.
