The Lac la Hache Tomahawks split wins in a couple of home games last weekend with Omineca Ice at Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena.
Game 1 on Dec. 3 came to an exciting shootout after teams were unable to break a 2-2 deadlock by the end of regulation time. Omineca eventually won with a deciding goal by Derek Little.
Tomahawk Wade Balbernie was named player of the game on Saturday and coach Al Navrot supported the choice, calling him a good quality player.
The Hawks were flying high once again after Sunday’s retribution rematch where they easily took Omineca, 8-2.
They led 2-1 at the end of the first period, and then pummelled the Ice with five unanswered goals in the second. Jeremy Zelt scored the Hawks final marker in the last minute of the game with an assist from Craig Camille.
Navrot says Omineca is the strongest team they’ve faced on the ice this season and their goalie was hard to beat on Saturday.
“We had lots of chances, but their goaltender was hot and their whole team played strong.”
Navrot adds that on Sunday, you could sense the difference in attitude on the bench.
“Everyone was in good spirits and we played well as a team. Losing always reminds you how good winning feels.”
Lac la Hache’s Drew Rose was Sunday’s player of the game. “He’s a good defenceman and really made a difference for us,” says Navrot.
Willy Sellars was in net both nights for the Hawks.
Donovan Nicholas from Deadman Creek was a new addition to the roster last week. He was responsible for two of the Tomahawks’ goals on Sunday and Navrot says he is excited about having Nicholas on the team.
