Hawrys fires clutch goals

Brett Hawrys is off to the Minto Cup with the Coquitlam Adanacs.

Brett Hawrys turned up the heat in the Western Canadian lacrosse championship and helped guide the Coquitlam Adanacs to their seventh Minto Cup appearance.

The Adanacs downed the Alberta champion Calgary Mountaineers 3-1 in the best-of-five Western final at the Coquitlam Sports Centre.

Hawrys registered a goal in the first two games, and two goals in Saturday’s Game 3, a 9-8 loss.

The Adanacs, who won the fourth game 7-6 Sunday, will take on the Eastern champion Six Nations Arrows of Hagersville, Ont. in the Junior A Minto Cup.

The Arrows swept the Whitby Warriors in the Ontario Junior A Lacrosse League final for their fourth straight Ontario championship.

Hawrys and the Adanacs edged the New Westminster Salmonbellies 4-3 in the best-of-seven B.C. Junior A championship.

In 10 B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League playoff games, Hawrys pulled six goals and 11 points.

The 2011 Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League Rookie of the Year is enjoying his first playoff run with the yellow and purple.

He spent two seasons with the Nanaimo Timbermen before getting dealt to the Adanacs prior to the playoffs.

He amassed 39 goals and 67 points in 17 games this year. In 2013, he supplied 47 goals and 76 points in his first season of with the T-Men.

The Adanacs won the national in 2010 and finished second five times. The Arrows won the Minto in 1992 and 2007, and have finished second three times. The two teams met during the 1992 championships with the Arrows defeating the Adanacs in seven games.

The Minto Cup begins Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre. Game 2 goes Sunday night. All games start at 8 p.m.
