It’s a busy weekend on the campus of UBCO with a playoff rugby match spotlighted as well as as men’s and women’s volleyball teams in action at home.
Here’s a look at what’s happening this weekend with the UBCO Heat.
Women’s Rugby
Finishing the regular season with a record of 6-1, the Heat are headed to the playoffs feeling with its first test this weekend at home versus the Brit Lions in the first round of the 2013 Lower Mainland Senior Tier 2 Division Playoffs.
The Heat earned a huge win versus the same Brit Lions squad they will face this weekend, defeating the Lions 68-0 at John Oliver Park in Delta to conclude a great first regular season for women’s rugby at UBC Okanagan.
“To put our accomplishment this year in context, doing this well in the first year of operation is pretty amazing,” said head coach Roby O’Brien. “Last year, our women did compete in the same division but did it in partnership with the local community who supplied many experienced quality players. However, this season, it has been solely UBC Okanagan players, and they have done a fantastic job coming together and becoming a very competitive squad.”’
The Heat and Lions will get another crack at each other this weekend in the semi-final with the Heat playing host on Saturday at field M72 at Missions Sports Fields. Game-time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Women’s Volleyball
The 6-2 Heat return home this weekend, hosting their first series in three weeks, as they welcome the 3-5 Winnipeg Wesmen for two games on Friday and Saturday.
Last weekend’s visit to Saskatchewan lead to two victories for the Heat, as they earned two straight-set victories over the host Huskies Friday’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m. and Saturday’s game scheduled for 5 p.m at the UBCO gymnasium.
Men’s Volleyball
After being unable to capture a win last weekend, the 1-7 Heat return to the confines of UBC’s Okanagan campus, playing host to the visiting 4-4 Winnipeg Wesmen for games Friday and Saturday.
The Heat were unable to take a victory from the host Saskatchewan Huskies, losing both games last weekend whileWinnipeg split its series versus the visiting fifth-ranked Thunderbirds of UBC.
Friday’s game is scheduled for 8 p.m., while Saturday’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Women’s Basketball
The 1-5 Heat women hit the road for the second time this season, traveling to Alberta to play the 2-4 Lethbridge Pronghorns and the 4-2 Calgary Dinos.
The Heat were unable to secure a home victory last weekend dropping both games to Victoria. Lethbridge also lost both of its games while Calgary earned a pair of wins.
Men’s Basketball
Unable to earn an upset victory over the third-ranked Vikes last weekend, the 0-6 Heat men’s basketball team will hit the road for two games – one versus the 3-3 Lethbridge Pronghorns, and the second versus the 2-4 Calgary Dinos.
The Heat had a good effort versus third-ranked Victoria but were outdone by the Vikes, who stormed UBC Okanagan to earn two victories.
Men’s Rugby
The 0-7 Heat will continue in search of their first victory within the Okanagan Spring Brewery League this weekend, travelling to Abbotsford to face the 6-2 Abbotsford RFC.
