The UBC Okanagan Heat men’s rugby squad is the Hindson Cup champion for the second time in three years.
On Saturday in Kelowna, the Heat defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 15-3 in the final of the annual university tournament.
“I’m absolutely thrilled,” said Heat flanker Sam Overton. “It was a tough competition like last year, but this year coming into the second half we buckled down and went in as hard as we did in the first half; we never let up for a moment.”
Fellow Heat flanker Cole Mosychuk played an integral role in the Heat victory, scoring two tries and earning MVP honours for the tournament. “The game could’ve ended either way,” said Mosychuk. “They could be holding the trophy right now but honestly I think we wanted it more and that’s all it took today.”
UBC Okanagan’s James Scott also got a penalty kick and a conversion to add to the Heat scoring.
In round robin play for the tournament UBC Okanagan defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 43-0 and the Simon Fraser 24-0.
The UBC Okanagan’s women’s rugby squad was also in action on Saturday, taking on the Mereloma Rugby Club in regular season action at the Apple Bowl earlier in the day. The Heat women came out with a convincing 56-7 win on the day.
Meanwhile, Former tournament MVP Judah Campbell was also at the finals on Saturday, making his first public appearance since sustaining an injury in a match playing for the Kelowna Crows several weeks ago.
