The UBC Okanagan Heat bowed 70-63 to the host Brandon Bobcats in CIS women’s basketball play Saturday night at the Healthy Living Centre.
Kaela Cranston led the Bobcats, notching six three-pointers in an effective 25-point night. Cassie Cooke added 21 points as well, including a dozen in the fourth quarter.
“Cassie Cooke just took over the game late,” said Heat head coach Heather Semeniuk. “We just couldn’t stop her in the fourth quarter.”
Things might have gone a different way if illness had not have struck the team earlier this week. Krystal Schouten (4th year, Winnipeg) did not travel due to illness. In addition, the Heat’s other post threat, Julia Reichert (first year, Princeton), was battling flu-like symptoms.
A much bigger Brandon squad took advantage of a decimated Heat front line. Brandon outscored the Heat 30-18 in the paint, while out-rebounding UBC Okanagan 43-39.
Shenelle Tamminen (1st year, Calgary), for the second straight game, sparked the Heat offence, this time with 18 points and four rebounds. Jessica Jazdarehee (2nd year, Coquitlam) and Emily Kanester (3rd year, Vernon) added 12 points each.
The Heat were only able to shoot 36 per cent from the field. However, UBC Okanagan was an efficient 7-for-15 from three-point land, with Kanester, Jazdarehee, and Tamminen all shooting over 50 per cent from beyond the arc.
UBC Okanagan drops to 2-10, while Brandon vaults to 3-9.
The Heat host the Trinity Western Spartans of Langley this weekend.
In Canada West women’s volleyball, the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds of Vancouver iced the third-ranked Heat 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-21) Saturday at the North Kelowna Campus Gym.
The ‘Birds set the tone early, hitting .323 as a team and holding the Heat to a negative team kill percentage of -.121. Alissa Coulter provided 10 of UBC’s 34 kills. Rosie Schlagintweit and Lisa Barclay provided nine kills apiece for the ‘Birds.
“I thought UBC played really solid and really didn’t give us anything,” said Heat head coach Steve Manuel.
Kaitlynn Given (2nd year, Kelowna) led the Heat with six kills and nine digs. Katy Klomps (3rd year, Surrey) and Katie Wuttunnee (3rd year, North Vancouver) added a combined six kills and five block assists in support.
