The Abbotsford Heat have lost their voice.
Dave Sheldon, the local AHL club’s director of communications and broadcast, resigned on Tuesday to take a job at CKNW radio. Sheldon is best known as the Heat’s play-by-play man.
“I wasn’t looking to leave, but there are opportunities that arise in this business,” Sheldon said. “I enjoyed what I was doing with the Heat, and I really enjoyed building something from the ground up.
“CKNW, for years in this market, has been the flag-bearer for news and sports in this market. When someone like that gives you some interest, you’d better listen to what they have to say.”
Sheldon joined the Heat in 2009, prior to their inaugural season. Previous to that, he worked for the Western Hockey League’s Everett Silvertips, Chilliwack Bruins and Vancouver Giants.
Among other duties at CKNW, Sheldon will host Sportstalk on the weekends (9 p.m. to midnight).
On his way out, Sheldon thanked Abbotsford hockey fans for being so generous to him during his time with the Heat.
“This will probably help the Heat in some ways, in the sense that they know they have someone in Vancouver who has their back and is going to give them some coverage,” he said.
