Heat rally to torch Salmon Arm

After a disappointing 0-3 start Saturday in the District Bantam Girls Fastball Playdowns, the Vernon Heat cranked things up and won a 14-10 thriller over Salmon Arm Sunday at High Noon Park in Kelowna.

The Heat, sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion #25, and Salmon Arm were tied 9-9 in the sixth inning with no time remaining. International rules came into effect with a tiebreaker (runner starts on second base) in the seventh inning. Vernon batted and earned five runs, and then Salmon Arm followed, getting only one run in their last bats.

In Saturday games, Sicamous scored twice in the final inning for a 9-7 win over the Heat, Kelowna stopped the Heat 11-3 and Westside grounded Vernon 15-3.

Shelby Munk pitched all four games, hit a home run in the first game and added three triples for the weekend. Dallyce Edwards snagged numerous balls at shortstop, while supplying two hits to left field and awesome hotbox action between third and home.

Danica Jensen smacked a handful of doubles, including a three-run shot against Salmon Arm.Skylar Richard caught a line drive to third, resulting in the game-winning third out versus Salmon Arm.

Samantha Cook and Brianna Leon supplied RBI, Megan Vadnais caught a pop fly in centre field and rapped a double to left, Desiree Turnbull homered Sunday and Morgan Vanderzwan tripled.

Dayna Hanley stroked a line drive double past third, while Daina Bader caught a smash down third and tagged out the runner.

Mario Richard is head coach of the Heat, while Patty Edwards is a base coach/manager and Don Cook is a base coach.
