UBCO captures fall season in Div. 1 with shutout of Merlaomas

The UBC Okanagan Heat proved to be the cream of the crop in B.C. Div. 1 women’s rugby.

The Heat completed an unbeaten fall season with a 6-0 record, defeating the Meralomas 31-0 on Saturday at Vancouver’s Connaught Park.

UBCO has secured top spot and will have a bye this weekend when the final games of the season are played.

The Heat team dominated the play in the first half, but it wasn’t until the 15-minute mark that the UBCO got on the scoreboard.

Kate Smith would once again use her exceptional speed to break out and score the games first try. Kelsey Wuerstl added a second try later in the half that was converted by Chloe Worrall to bring the score to 12-0 at the break.

“Jacqueline Dubreuil who dominated the play the entire game,” said head coach Rob O’Brien.

Dubreuil scored her try in the second half to complment Wuerstl and Smith who would both notch tries in after the break. Chloe Worrall converted two of these three tries to bring the final score to 31-0.

The undefeated  UBC Okanagan squad is the league champion as the 15s season comes to a close. In the new year, the Heat will train and play sevens in preparation for the CIS national championships in March.
