The UBC Okanagan women’s soccer squad is heating up at a most opportune time of the season.
With the PACWEST playoffs just around the corner, the Heat are on a season-long four-game winning streak.
UBCO won twice at home over the weekend, opening up on Saturday with a 2-0 win over the Langara Falcons.
Michelle Smith, on a corner kick at 59 minutes, and Lindsey Briggs in the 76th minute scored for the Heat.
On Sunday, the Heat downed Quest University 3-1. Goal scorers for the Heat were defender Hayley Carlson on a penalty kick, forward Kirsten Dodds, with her team-leading fourth PACWEST goal in 2012, and forward Taylor Candelario.
“A fantastic weekend for us and a great game again today,” remarked head coach Claire Paterson after Sunday’s win. “We played hard for 90 minutes and came up with two great goals on top of the penalty kick.”
The Heat (6-1-5) is now in second spot in PACWEST, three points back of TRU and four ahead of Langara.
UBCO will close out the regular season at home this coming weekend with games against VIU and Capilano.
The defending provincial silver medalists will be in Squamish for provincials, Oct. 26 to 28.
Heat men
Last year’s provincial bronze medalists, the UBC Okanagan men’s soccer squad won’t be returning to the podium in 2012.
But at least the Heat and Austin Jones won’t go winless this season as they recorded a 3-2 victory over Quest University Sunday in PACWEST action at Nonis Field.
Jones scored all three goals for the Heat who won for the first time in 12 (1-7-4) tries this season.
When asked about what the win meant for his team, Heat head coach Dante Zanatta commented: “I’m happy for the players. All the games we’ve played we have put in a good effort and just missed putting the ball in the net. We’re encouraged by the steps taken in the right direction.”
The Heat was officially eliminated from playoff contention on Saturday after suffering a 2-0 loss to the Langara Falcons.
One of UBCO’s best chances came in the 29th minute when Dylan Abbott put a hard boot to a pass off of a corner kick by Austin Jones but the shot sailed just over the bar.
UBCO will close out its season next weekend at home to VIU and Capilano.
