The people of Kitimat, BC, threw a fund raiser dance for their local hero, Corner Grass Racing Team/Husaberg’s Ben “The Giant Killer” Rego a week ago Saturday.
Kitimat, a town of just over 9,000 people, wanted to do all they could to help Rego compete in the CEC series and Xtinction this season.
Rego sent us this excited text message: “A bunch of my friends threw a fund raiser dance for me this weekend. The grand total came to $11, 900 plus a new set of tires for my truck!!”
It’s awesome when a community gets behind their athletes, but even more awesome when that athlete happens to be an enduro racer!
“326 tickets were sold for the dance,” Rego said, adding, “We even raffled off a CGRT hat for $1000! Kitimat is a tightly knit and really supportive community!”
The money, and the tires, will go a long way toward helping Rego chase his dreams of becoming Canada’s next National Enduro Champion.
Last season, on a shoestring budget and riding a worn out bike, Rego put in stellar performances across Canada at the 2010 CEC nationals, Xtinction and the Montreal Endurocross.
The underdog’s great results left his factory-supported competitors shaking their heads in disbelief. Legions of new Rego fans wondered just how well he could do with competitive machines and more support.
Now with CGRT, Husaberg and the people of Kitimat behind him, it looks like 2011 will be the year we find out!
