High school rugby finals hit the turf

Senior high school boys’ rugby finals hit the pitch Thursday, May 12, however teams and locations were still to be announced at press time.

The Tier 1 Howard Russell cup features the first- and second-place teams from Tier 1, and the Colonel Hudgens Cup the third-place team from Tier 1 and the first-place team from Tier 2. The Tier 2 Community Bowl features the second- and third-place teams from Tier 2, and the Tier 2 Community Shield the fourth- and fifth-place teams from Tier 2. Oak Bay and St. Michaels University School play in Tier 1 with Claremont while Glenlyon Norfolk School competes in Tier 2.

In junior rugby, Oak Bay hosts Esquimalt for a 3:45 p.m. kick-off May 11.

Senior girls’ rugby returns Friday, May 6, with Esquimalt hosting games between Oak Bay, Belmont, Mt. Doug, Reynolds and Claremont. Senior girls’ finals were still being determined at press time, but they’ll be played Friday, May 13. Stay tuned to lowerislandschoolsports.ca for details.

In high school badminton, playoffs for the “A” league – which includes Oak Bay and SMUS, Claremont and Mt. Douglas – are still being decided at press time.

In high school golf, the Lower Island Tournament comes to the Royal Colwood Golf Course Monday, May 16, while Oak Bay’s track and field athletes head to the University of Victoria’s Centennial Stadium Wednesday, May 11 for the lower Island championships beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The Victoria Eagles hit the field for a busy week of PBL action. On Saturday, May 7 the Eagles host the Langley Blaze for a doubleheader at Lambrick Park. First pitches are at 12 and 2:30 p.m.

The Junior Premier Eagles are at home, hosting the North Shore Twins at Lambrick Park Sunday, May 8. Play opens on Game 1 at 11 a.m. with the second at 1:30 p.m.

The Junior Premiers also have a mid-week match-up against their rival Victoria Mariners Thursday, May 12. Play opens at Oak Bay’s Henderson Field at 6 p.m. The Junior Eagles finish off a busy week Saturday, May 14, hosting the Whalley Chiefs in a Lambrick doubleheader at 12 and 2:30 p.m.

The Premier Mariners are on the road this weekend, facing the Whalley Chiefs for a double-header Saturday, May 7.

The Junior Premier Victoria Mariners have plenty of action this week, opening Saturday, May 7 at Henderson hosting the North Shore Twins. The doubleheader features 1 and 3:30 p.m. scheduled starts. Following their Thursday tilt against the JP Eagles, May 14 and 15 have the Mariners hosting the Okanagan Athletics at Henderson Field (3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Saturday May 14 and 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. May 15).
