Another year, another Hillview City Junior Golf title for the McEachran-Law family.
This time, it was Matt, 16, shooting a 5-over 61 Monday to win the 22nd annual championship under sun-drenched skies. His older brother, Chris, won the 2011 crown.
Tyler Pitt, who went on to play NCAA golf in San Francisco, took the tourney three times in the 1990s, while Jarret McNeal, the club champion at Spallumcheen, won back-to-back titles in 2004-05.
Brady Stead, a top provincial junior, captured the 2009-10 Hillview trophies. Jake Horsley won the first two tournaments in 1988-89.
PGA Tour regular Chris Baryla was runner-up a few times while winning several age group prizes.
McEachran-Law, who double bogeyed the par-4 10th, rebounded by draining a 20-foot putt for a deuce on the par-3 15th. On that same hole, Travis Jackson hit his tee shot two feet from the cup and made his birdie putt.
McEachran-Law tied for 63rd in the B.C. Junior Boys Tournament this past summer at the Sunshine Coast Golf Course in Roberts Creek.
There was a field of 44 aged 17 and under, including six-year-old phenom Ryan Vest, who averages 150 yards off the tee.
McEachran-Law, who won by two strkes over Nicholas Friesen and Michael Lenoury, took home a LCD Television.
Friesen, 15, won the single-hole playoff over Lenoury by scoring a birdie-2 on the par-3 first hole. Lenoury ruled the 14-17 age flight with his 63.
Jackson was third with a 64 (retrogression), while Mac Gourdine was third with a 64.
In the 12-13 age flight, Dexter Weiten and Parker Wadsworth tied at 66 with Weiten winning the playoff.
Nicholas Cherkowski won the 11 & Under flight with a 71 ahead of club champion Braeden Cooper (72) and Colton Schaper-Cotter with a 74.
Austin Dubland claimed the nine-hole division with a 53.
Kendra Jones-Munk, 10, was the winner of the 9-hole girls championship with a 38.
“A big thank you goes to our dedicated volunteers, Betty Murray and Judy Wakefield,” said Jon Atmore of Hillview. “The club would also like to give special thanks to Cyril Foster and Amy Jackson for their generous donations to the 2012 Junior Championship.”
