Cross country runners from Correlieu and QJS made the trip to Vanderhoof for their first race of the season last Saturday.

Cross country runners from Correlieu and QJS made the trip to Vanderhoof for their first race of the season last Saturday.

Both teams performed well, with a couple of the Correlieu jr. boys stepping up to the longer, senior track.

“The QJS team is off to a very strong start with more than triple the number of runners compared to last year,” QJS coach, Scott Trueman said.

“The season looks promising because we will be able to field a full team for boys and girls, thus increasing our chances of qualifying to compete at the provincial championships.”

Grade 11 Konrad Teetzen was fourth in the sr. boys race, followed closely by Gr. 10 boys Cole Dinsdale in fifth and Dillion Cathcart in eighth.

The two junior boys chose to run in the senior boys race in order to run the 6.3 km course, which they will have to do in the zone championship race to qualify for provincials.

Kyra Teetzen also ran well, placing second in the jr. girls, followed by first year runners Mia Kozak in third, Baylee McGillivray in sixth and Brea Wood in eighth.

Amanda Albers, also in her first year of running x-country, placed ninth in senior girls.

Olivia Baptiste was first overall in the girls’ race.

In the bantam girls category, Avery Drew was second, Lyra Jonasson third, and Cassidy Giesbrecht fourth.  In juvenile girls, Olivia Baptiste was first, Grace McTaggart second.

In Bantam boys, Olin Lee was first and Braeden Smith third.  In junior boys, Justice Quamme placed in eighth.

Racing up to the senior category against grade 12 athletes, Brennan Schwartz was ninth, Dane Jacobsen tenth, Ryan Elden 11th and Liam Matzner 15th.
