Today (Feb. 12) is Hockey Day in Canada, the CBC’s annual celebration of the game.

The News Bulletin’s focus is closer to home, though, as we present our annual salute to Nanaimo Minor Hockey Association athletes.

There’s no better time, considering the stage of the season – it’s playoffs, and the city’s rep teams are all facing huge games this weekend.

Today’s action is all at the Nanaimo Ice Centre, where the Ramsay Lampman Rhodes Extreme midget A girls face off first, taking on South Island in the first game of the Island final at 12:45. Then it’s the bantam Tier 1 boys facing Victoria Racquet Club at 3 p.m., followed by the midget Tier 2 boys against Comox Valley at 5:15 p.m.

Other rep teams play playoff games at the NIC and at Frank Crane Arena on Sunday.
