Holmberg helps UBC win CWFLL title

The UBC Thunderbirds are BC Men’s Field Lacrosse Tier II provincial champions, and some Abbotsford talent helped make that championship possible.

Abbotsford native Nicholas Holmberg was a starting defender on the team, which clinched the Canada West Field Lacrosse League title win with a 10-9 victory over Victoria on March 13.

The Thunderbirds won five games over two weekends during the playoff run to capture the championship. It’s the first time UBC has won the title, after falling in the finals in 2015.

In their first game of the tournament on March 5, UBC topped the Ridge Meadows Tropics 11-5 to earn their first playoff winof the season. UBC then blanked the Abbotsford Attack 8-0 on March 11 to secure their second victory.

UBC continued the playoff run with a 6-4 win over Victoria on March 12, and an 8-3 win over Vancouver on March 12 advanced the Thunderbirds to the final.

The Abbotsford Attack bounced back from the earlier loss to UBC to finish third at the event.

The CWFFL is the home of senior men’s field lacrosse in the Lower Mainland, and they play a split season (September to mid-November and mid-February to early April), with all games in New Westminster.

The league is an extension to the Pacific Coast Field Lacrosse League (youth and girls) and provides a means for graduating U19 players to continue playing field lacrosse. For more information on the league, visit cwfll.ca.
