The Penticton Hornets spring hockey club capped its season by stinging the competition en route to capturing the Canada West Cup in West Kelowna May 8-10.
The Hornets took the championship with a 5-2 victory against the host Okanagan All Stars.
“Team morale was awesome, the players were dedicated and worked hard,” said Hornets coach Johnny Aantjes.
The Hornets started with a 6-1 win over the junior Oil Kings (Blue) from Edmonton, followed by a 12-1 victory over the Okanagan Desert Dawgs from Osoyoos. In the third game, the Hornets defeated the host Okanagan All Stars 5-2. In the quarter-final round, the Hornets soared past the junior Oil Kings (Red) 10-3. The Hornets faced a very tough, tight-checking Langley squad in the semifinal and took the end-to-end battle 5-2.
The Hornets hockey club is comprised of players born in 2003 from the Okanagan, and includes Penticton products Kai Espenhain, Levi Carter, Jacob Schulting, Chris Schulting, Marty Aantjes, Dylan Milton, Rickson, Kruger, Liam Eacott, Andrew Howells and Finn Halliday.
