Horwood holds early lead at Royale Cup

Vancouver’s Holly Horwood takes early lead at Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship at Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club.

Vancouver’s Holly Horwood held the lead after the opening round of the Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship Tuesday at Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club.

Horwood carded an opening round even-par 71 to take a two-stroke lead heading into Round 2 Wednesday.

The top 70 women, plus ties, will make the cut for Thursday’s final round. Round 2 of the championship teed off this morning at 7:30.

Diane Dolan of Gatineau, Que., Lynda Palahniuk of Kelowna and Lisa Smego of Olympia, Wash., held a share of second after firing 2-over 73 in their first rounds.

A pair of former women’s senior champions were tied for fifth, as 2013 Canadian Golf Hall of Fame inductee Alison Murdoch of Victoria, and former Vernon resident Jackie Little, now of Port Alberni, each posted 3-over 74s.

In the inter-provincial team competition, Team B.C. (Palahniuk, Little and Karen Pultz of Surrey) held a three-stroke lead over Quebec heading into the final round of play with a score of 5-over 147.

Quebec was at 8-over 150 and Ontario was third at 12-over 154.

Horwood also leads the Super Senior competition (60+) by two strokes over Palahniuk, with Murdoch following in third.

The winner of the Royale Cup earns an exemption into the 2013 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, Sept. 21-26 at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif.
