MBRC wins girls standings and places third overall

The Maple Bay Rowing Club won the overall girls title and helped the club finish tied for third in the combined standings at the annual Maple Bay Regatta on Quamichan Lake on April 8.

“We once again have a very strong group of young rowers coming up, especially on the girls side,” MBRC head coach Cheryl Thibodeau said. “And we also have a wonderful group of senior girls that have set a great example for these new rowers coming in.”

Maple Bay rowers collected three gold medals, winning the novice women’s coxed quad (Milla Watt, Ella Stemler, Halle DeValk-Zaiss, Marley Trithart and cox Grace Brigham), A women’s quad (Brigitte Reid, Jayne Wright, Taylor Brouwer and Taylor Kropp) and novice women’s double (Watt and Stemler).

The club also won silver medals in the C women’s coxed quad (Bailey McMillian, Watt, Stemler, Chloe Cizeron and cox Brigham), A women’s double (Wright and Brouwer), and lightweight women’s quad (Makenzie English, Emily Wallich, Myfanwy Warren and Cara Baudin).

Bronze medals were won by the MBRC in the lightweight women’s single (English), lightweigh men’s single (Chris Jones) lightweight men’s quad (Dylan Annandale, Jones, Dredyn Fontana and Haiden Gudgeon), C women’s double (Brigham and McMillian), lightweight men’s double (Annandale and Jones), and C men’s coxed quad (Brighton Reid, Corbin Hennessy, Tanner Hennessy, Carson Batty and cox Brigham).

More than 300 rowers from 10 clubs competed in the regatta, including athletes from Brentwood College and Shawnigan Lake School. Nanaimo Rowing Club topped the men’s and overall points standings despite bringing only 14 rowers to the event.

“It was great to see the smaller clubs up in the top three placings this year,” Thibodeau said. “It really gives us a boost of confidence.”
