The Immaculata Mustangs made the most of home court advantage to win the 2015 edition of the Mustang Classic boys basketball tournament.
The capacity crowd inside the Immaculata gym went home happy Saturday night, as the Mustangs defeated South Okanagan Secondary 74-59 in the tournament finale.
“We played a very solid solid basketball game, we were very composed for most of the game, took care of the ball executed very well, extremely proud of our kids,” said Mustangs coach Dino Gini. “We had each player play their role and they all contributed to the win against Oliver.”
The Mustangs defeated No. 1 ranked St. John’s in the semifinals, before meeting up with the Oliver-based school in the final, the seventh-ranked team in B.C. at the 2A level.
Immaculata’s Michael Gini scored 31 points in the final and was named the tournament’s MVP.
Dino Gini said it was a true team effort.
“Corbin Beauchemin really stepped up and gave us big minutes and big points and helped to take a bit of heat off of Michael,” he said. “Gavin Day, Michael Macdonnell, Luke Jones, Lachlan Wallace, Braeden Spelliscy and Nick Mercuri all played important roles in helping us to put together a complete game.”
The best defensive player for the Mustang Classic went to Austin Basso from Oliver. Most inspirational player of the tournament went to Mustangs’ Gavin Day who had a great tourney as a defensive stopper.
