Oceanside rec bantam club snares dramatic Powell River finals win on goal with one second remaining

Matthew Green’s goal with one second remaining lifted the Oceanside bantam Hurricanes to a wild, 5-4 victory over Cowichan Valley in the championship final of the Powell River bantam rec tournament Sunday.

The Hurricanes took a 4-2 lead into the third period of the final, but Cowichan scored with 2:14 remaining to close within a goal, then pulled its goalie and scored with an extra attacker to tie it 4-4 with just 42 seconds to go.

The game seemed destined for a tiebreaking shoot-out when the Hurricanes were whistled for a penalty with just eight second left in regulation. But Green won the face off, carried the puck into the Cowichan zone and scored with one second left to cap the team’s unbeaten run in the tournament.

The Hurricanes’ weekend included an 11-3 win over Comox 2, a 5-2 win over Powell River Taws, a 1-1 draw with Powell River Sunshine Coast and a 7-0 blanking of Cowichan Valley to wrap up pool play.
