The University of Victoria made plenty of sports headlines this week.

The UVic Vikes are well represented on the three lists of national team players announced last week by Field Hockey Canada. Three former Vikes were named to the senior women’s national team, two current Vikes were named to the senior development squad, and four Vikes earned a spot on a junior development squad.

In the pool, four more Vikes swimmers qualified for the  for CIS championships at last weekend’s Christmas Cracker Invitational at Saanich Commonwealth Place. Vikes rookie Rosie Moulton, senior Craig Dagnall and third years Richard Bourgeois and Aidan Thirkell join first year Ryan Howe as new CIS qualifiers this weekend for the CIS championships scheduled for Feb. 19 to 21.

The Vikes also announced the endowment of the Joey Weisbrodt Memorial Basketball award in remembrance of coach Joseph Weisbrodt, who passed away 10 years ago, and issued a call for nominations for the UVic Sports Hall of Fame Hall in all categories – athlete, team, coach, builder or administrator. Awards are presented each spring at the Celebration of Champions banquet.

With a six-game win streak at press-time and a solid lead at the top of the South Island Division of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League, the Victoria Cougars Junior B squad will look to use this week’s three games to regain top spot overall from Campbell River.

The Cougars visit the struggling Peninsula Panthers Friday at Panorama Rec Centre. The puck drops at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14 at the Archie Browning Centre for what’s sure to be a challenging tilt against the Campbell River Storm, two points ahead of the Cougars at press time.
