One week after Canada’s men’s rugby team and Alexis Creek’s Jake Ilnicki fell to Ireland, the team was back in action for its second of three matches on its international November tour Saturday in Bucharest.
There, Canada narrowly fell to Romania, 21-16.
Canada started the better side, however, Romania came fighting back and should have had two tries if not for outstanding defensive work.
After exchanging penalties, Canada thought they had the first try of the game, but it was determined the ball had been knocked on and was taken back.
Romania added its second try in the 24th minute before pushing its lead to 18-6 by the half.
Canada came roaring out of the gates in the second half and, despite an endless wave of phases inside the Romanian 22, they couldn’t find a try.
Canada’s Phil Mack would touch down in the 74th minute but Canada couldn’t muster any more offence as they were handed their third loss to Romania in as many years.
Canada and Ilincki will continue its November tour Friday against Samoa.
Kickoff is noon with broadcast details to be confirmed.
