Immaculata single A senior girls show they can run with big dogs

Impressive showing against bigger schools last weekend

The goal of the Immaculata senior girls basketball team heading into last weekends KSS Best of The West tournament was simply to compete against some of the province’s top teams. Not only did they compete, the Mustangs, currently ranked number 1 in Single A, sported a perfect 4-0 record in the tournament that featured six triple A teams, including  No. 3 Riverside of Coquitlam, No. 5 MEI of Abbotsford, and the No. 10 KSS Owls. Rounding out the field were two top ranked Double A teams, Duchess Park, No. 2 and Vernon Secondary, No. 3.

“This is a special group, they are young and they are improving each time they are on the court,” said coach Dino Gini. “Their compete level is the best I have seen.”

Running with some of the top senior girls teams in the province was even more impressive when you examine the Mustangs young roster. The Mustangs dressed a lineup including one Grade 9, six Grade 10’s, three Grade 11 players and just one senior.

“We have built a strong foundation, which started years ago, our program is solid, with great assistant coaches and great support from our teachers and from our principal and of course from the players parents,” said Gini. “I demand a lot from the kids and they continue to raise their level of play… we still are learning and still have parts of the game to improve on but I am so proud of this group of girls.”
