Inglis paces TWU Spartans to win

Sarah Inglis topped the field at the Western Washington Classic for the third straight year.

Trinity Western University’s Sarah Inglis posted cross country’s version of a hat trick last weekend.

The native of Falkirk, Scotland won the Western Washington Classic for the third year in a row, as she both set a course record and helped the Spartans capture the team title for the second straight year.

Despite blustery conditions, Inglis won the six kilometre event in a record time of 20:47, bettering the previous record, which she set last year, of 20:52.

Similar to her 2014 effort, she finished well out in front, crossing the line 32 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

While Inglis took the individual title, the No. 2 ranked Spartans put together an outstanding team effort as they put three athletes in the top five to earn the championship in convincing fashion. Regan Yee and Lisa Brooking both clocked a time of 21:24 with Yee coming in fourth and Brooking finishing fifth. Mirelle Martens, who was 13th in 22:18, and Hannah Ryan, who was 34th in 23:05, rounded out TWU’s top five. The Spartans finished with 48 points to win the team event.

Alaska Anchorage was second with 84 points while nationally No. 6-ranked Victoria was fifth overall. Amongst other Canadian universities, Simon Fraser was seventh, UBC was ninth, and Windsor was 10th.
