More than 200 competitors put their talent on the line in an effort to take home cash prizes at the 26th Annual Interlakes BCRA Rodeo on July 30-31.
Some competitors did very well and went home with a little more jingle in their jeans than they had when they arrived at the two-day event sponsored by the Interlakes Community Centre.
Others will pack up their gear and horses, head for another rodeo next weekend and hope for a little help from Lady Luck.
Rodeo chairman Carney Myers says the weather was great and the attendance was up over last year.
“We ran out of hotdogs and hamburgers on Sunday, so it must have been up. We had really good attendance both days.
“The weather was good; the crowd was great; and people seemed to enjoy it. There were no problems, hardly anybody got hurt.”
George Archie, a tough-as-nails bull rider from 100 Mile House, had a few bumps and bruises after he and Mach Three were the last ones out of the chute on Sunday.
The big bull almost shrugged Archie on the first jump out of the chute, but the cowboy fought his way back up onto Mach Three’s shoulders. A couple of mighty jumps later, however, Archie was spun hard to the ground and the bull’s rear legs straddled the downed cowboy’s body.
Archie grimaced in obvious pain and had trouble getting up. Fortunately, the bull fighters darted in to get Mach Three’s attention; it worked as the bull found a new target and ring attendants pulled Archie up and away to safety.
Noting nobody says anything about injuries, Myers adds the first aid attendants told her he would be OK.
Stock contractor, D&B Rodeo Stock, brought in some great bucking stock that made the cowboys work for their money.
The bulls were big, feisty bulls and looking to head butt the riders when they tossed all but one of them to the ground during the weekend.
The steers were big, fast and elusive in both Tie Down Roping (one cowboy going to the pay window) and the steers threw a shutout in Steer Wrestling.
The ropers were also up against some athletic steers that dodged and darted.
Alexis Glassford of Quesnel had a great weekend as she won the Gordon Brown Memorial Junior High Point Buckle for winning the most money of the junior competitors.
