Investors Group Athletics ready for playoff run

Men's baseball league playoffs get underway Sunday at Highland Field

The playoffs are finally here for the Komoux Men’s Real Baseball League. After a six-month adventure of a season that started in early March with spring training, the playoff pairings are set  And, we have a certain young team ready to make some serious noise against the favoured veteran squads.

On Sunday, Sept. 8 the playoffs hit full stride with three nine-inning games scheduled for Highland Field.  At 9 a.m. the fifth seed Dundee Giants take on the fourth seed Williams Construction Nationals (these two teams will ensure that the field is nice and dry by the time the important next game begins).

At 12:30 p.m., the upstart seventh seed Investors Group Athletics plan to thump the aging second seed Happy’s Source for Sports Indians. At 4 p.m. the sixth seed Brian McLean Yankees meet the third seed Courtenay Plumbing Twins.

“The noon-hour tilt is certainly the one you do not want to miss,” an Athletics’ spokesperson said. “The Investors Group team has been improving week by week, and may cause some real pain for Happy’s!

“With hitters such as Kim Hazard, Chris Janzen and Steve McNamee, the Athletics come at you hard and fast with the bats.  With pitchers like Kurt MacDonald, Mike Wiebe and John Slater, they throw all kinds of looks at you (some legal, others perhaps marginal).  With a defence anchored by the one and only Darryl Egeland at second, they force you to hit the gaps and watch for hidden balls,” the spokesperson said.

“No one is suggesting that Happy’s will be an easy target (although several Indians have been on vacation for a very long time). But this game may be a battle right through to the end.”

So, plan to spend a few hours at the best little park in the Valley.  Drive north to the end of Torrence Road (by the town yard), park there and walk 500 feet west to the fenced-in field. “See you on Sunday!” the spokesperson added.
