Mark Isfeld Secondary captured the AAA North Island High School Golf Championships for the first time in school history last week at Crown Isle.

The golf program has twice finished second at the Island championships and as high as sixth in B.C., but the North Island title had always eluded them until this year. Due to the tiering system in high school golf, Isfeld is considered AAA which means it has to compete against bigger schools. This was not a problem Tuesday as the boys finished with a combined score of 300, eight strokes better than second place Dover Bay from Nanaimo. Highland was third with 315. Vanier’s Nolan Laderoute scored a rare hole-in-one on the 16th.

Logan Yanick, a Grade 9 student, won individual low score honours with a three-under par 69. Other Isfeld A team members Mark Valliere, Matt Irvine, Ryan Snook and Keaton Dion all had strong rounds to contribute to the team score.

The top five teams out of nine at the tournament advanced to the Island Championships Monday, May 16 at Royal Colwood in Victoria. The top four Island teams then move on to provincials at the Dunes in Kamloops.

Isfeld Golf wishes to thank head instructor Bert Yaeger for his efforts in providing the team with a series of lessons to enhance their tournament play.

The team will host the AAA provincial championships at Crown Isle next year.

CHIP INS Isfeld’s top two golfers, Valliere and Yanick, competed last week in the RCGA Pacific Future Links Tournament, considered one of the ‘majors’ of junior golf in Canada … the Isfeld B team scored 345; team members Tyson Slater, Dylan Slater, Nick Crookall, Justin Mirabelli and Jared Leblanc have all made huge improvements in their games and are playing their best golf of the year …
