The Isfeld Ice senior boys basketball team opened the home season going 3-1 for the week.
Tuesday they opened with an 89-82 double overtime win over the John Barsby Bulldogs of Nanaimo. After a quick start going up 8-2 the Ice struggle to score and ended the first quarter down 17-12. At the end of three quarters, Isfeld was down 51-45. With less than two minutes to go, they were still down six. On three consecutive possessions, the Ice scored and got stops at the defensive end to tie the game on a Thaskani Mtawali layup with 17 seconds to go. At the end of the first overtime with the Ice up three they failed to block out and gave up a three-point play with 2.6 seconds left in double overtime. With the Ice up one in the second overtime they went on a 10-2 run to close out the game. Jacob Volkers hit two key threes on his way to 12 points. Mtawali added 19 and Riley Fussell led all scorers with 20.
At the home Ice Breaker tournament, the Ice opened with Timberline, controlling the game from the outset going out 25-2 and cruising to an 85-42 win. Aiden Mcdonald went 4/4 from the three-point line on his way to 12 points. Trent Johnson added 11 as did Volkers while Mtawali led a balanced attack with 12. In the semi, Isfeld faced number five ranked Shawnigan in a tough, physical matchup. Shawnigan won 46-31 with Dawson Fox scoring 10 and Mtawali adding 12. In the third-place game, the Ice faced Barsby for the second time in five days, winning 65-52. A better effort defensively kept the Bulldogs from running. In the second quarter the Ice outscored Barsby 17-6 to take control of the game going up 31-21 at the half. The defensive effort continued into the third quarter as the Ice extended their lead to 53-34. Leading scorers were Fox with 10 and Mtawali with 12.
Isfeld plays Carihi Tuesday night in Campbell River.
