Nanaimo’s Island Top Team were among the leaders of the Revolution.
Seattle’s Revolution jiu-jitsu tournament was held March 5-6 and Island Top Team athletes came up with some winning results.
Shane Malone earned double gold, winning his purple belt gi and advanced no gi divisions while submitting all his opponents. In the no gi final he defeated a foe who outweighed him by 40 pounds.
Dwayne Johnston earned gold in his blue belt gi division. The 230-pound Top Team athlete had to take out a 300-pound opponent in the final.
Rory Van Vliet won gold in no gi. Van Vliet is new to competitive jiu-jitsu so “seeing him break through to the top of the podium was a great boost for our team,” said Robert Biernacki, Top Team instructor, in a press release.
