They will do some ziplining in Madrid, attend surf school in Lisbon and try sea kayaking in Barcelona.
In between the Vernon-Nelson U18 rugby Junior Jackals will play four international friendlies, three in Spain and one in Portugal. They leave Kelowna March 18 and return April 1.
“This has been in planning for two years,” said head man Mike Scheller, a longtime rugby and football coach at Fulton Secondary. ‘We went through a tour operator in the U.K. and they have done an awesome job.”
Scheller and fellow Vernon coaches Gord Cheyne, Brad Marsh and Brad’s son, Greysen Marsh, will be joined by L.V. Rogers Bombers coaches Mike Joyce and Brad Swanson of Nelson.
The 25-man roster includes 15 players from Vernon. Scheller’s beloved dog, Herb, the team mascot, is scheduled to fly first class.
The team will hold a fundraising Pub Night next Friday at the Kal Sports Bar. For $20, you get a burger and a beer (alternatives will be available).
There will 50-50 and gift basket draws along with a silent auction.
“We’re going to do very well on the lineouts with some very tall players,” said Scheller. “We’ll have a strong group of forwards: our scrum will be strong.”
The Jackals carry sponsorship from Re/Max, Kohler Canada Co. and the Armstrong Kin Club.
