Vernon Pee Wee Yellowjackets used stifling defence and creative offence to earn a 26-0 win over the Salmon Arm Colts to open their Southern Interior Football Conference season Sunday at Grahame Park.
The Vernon defence dominated the line of scrimmage all game, keeping the Colts from gaining any positive yards. Recording tackles for losses were Thomas Mackiewich, Bryce Tkachuk, Miles Forrest, Issac Olsen and Trey Defoor.
Mackiewich was a one-man wrecking crew on special teams, recording four tackles on kick-off duty.
The YellowJacket offence scored three touchdowns in the first half alone, all by different players.
The first TD came from Olsen on a penetrating run up the middle. Wingback Zach Benn took a well-executed reverse for a 45 yarder to put Vernon up 12-0.
Late in the second quarter, after great gains by runningback Riley MacGillvray, quarterback Dylan Huber ran a sneak through the middle for the other major.
Benn opened the second half with a 65-yard scamper for a touchdown, converted by Huber.
The rest of the second half was dominated by great running by Defoor.
The key to Vernon’s success was the great play from their offensive and defensive linemen.
In Junior Bantam action, the Vernon Marauders started their season with a disappointing 30-0 loss to the Salmon Arm Broncos Sunday afternoon at Grahame Park.
Jonah Waterstreet and Carson Labrecque both made some solid rushes, but were just one block away from being able to take it to the endzone.
Jacob LaFlame-Yonkkman, Bryce Goodrich, Tyler Braun, Mack Henry and Koalden Oakden all had solid games on defence.
