After a shocking win in the first round of the Jackson Cup tournament, Cowichan United’s luck ran out in the second round.

The Div. 2 team lost 2-0 to the Div. 1 VI Wave in a cup quarterfinal contest at Finlayson Turf in Victoria last Sunday.

United will return to Vancouver Island Soccer League action this Friday when they host Lakehill at the Sherman Road turf at 7:30 p.m. The team has a total of three league games left, and remain first in Div. 2, one point ahead of Vantreights, who have two games left.

The masters A Cowichan 49ers did manage to keep their cup hopes alive by beating Lakehill 4-0 at the Sherman Road Turf last Saturday to move on to the Tony Grover Cup semifinals. Sebastian Titone, Neall Rowlings, Erik Fuller and Henry Nelson scored the goals, while Rob McIntyre had the clean sheet in goal. The Niners will visit SFFC Old School for their next cup game on March 18.

In league action, the 49ers beat SFFC Internationals at Tyndall last Sunday, getting goals from Fuller, Ryan Fusick, Darcy Penner, Goran Jandiz, Adam Taft, Darcy Kulai and Darren Meiner, and another shutout from McIntyre. The Niners next league game will take place this Sunday as they visit CB Red Barn Bobcats at Lochside Turf.

The 49ers sit second in Masters A, two points back of UVic Alumni with two games left.

The Cowichan Outlaws of the Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association Div. 2 fell to 0-2 in the round-robin portion of the Stephanie Shergold Cup as they lost 2-0 to Bays United last Sunday.

The team also lost two league games in a busy week, falling 2-1 to Gorge last Thursday and 1-0 to Nanaimo this past Tuesday. Tiara Enger scored the lone goal against Gorge. For both league games, the Outlaws called up Maiya Modeste and Mariah Thomas from the Cowichan U17 Gold team.

“They made the games entertaining and played solid,” Outlaws coach Neall Rowlings said.

The Outlaws have one last cup game, this Sunday at noon at the Sherman Road turf. That will likely end the team’s season. Tryouts will take place in August, and Rowlings has committed to stay on as head coach as the team rebuilds.

The Over 30A Cowichan Cougars also lost their second Shergold Cup round-robin game, 1-0 against Prospect Lake’s Div. 2 team. The Cougars will play their last cup game this Sunday against Prospect Lake Over 30A team.
