It was down to the wire for Noah Elliott at the B.C. Summer Games, where his final throw in the javelin competition landed him on the podium.
Competing in the games for the first time, Elliott was at it early Friday morning to try and put himself in a medal position.
“I defaulted on the first two throws so I was a little nervous,” Elliott said.
“It all came down to my third and final throw and luckily I was able to make it a good one and I got a good score out of it.”
Elliott’s third and final toss was good enough to land him in second place overall, which he kept for the final standings, earning silver.
Also competing in discus, Elliott had another strong showing but just missed the podium, with a score of 39.55, two points shy of third place finish.
“It was pretty close, but I just came up short of medaling in the discus,” Elliott said. “Coming in fourth in B.C. though is pretty good, especially for me, so I’m really happy with the way that things turned out.”
The B.C. Summer Games took place over three days giving young athletes a chance to compete against the top competition in their age group and create friendships.
Over 3,200 athletes, plus as many coaches and volunteers were involved in the games.
“I had a great experience there, it was real good,” Elliott said.
“They had two dances and I went to both of them and had a great time. I got to meet tons of new people and made some new friends, that was pretty cool. It’s definitely something I’ll never forget.”
After a solid showing at the games, Elliott will now look ahead to next year, where he hopes to step up his track and field game and compete in the octathlon event.
With eight events in total, the octathlon is a pre–cursor to the decathlon that takes place at the Olympics.
The octathlon includes the 100-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, 400-meter run, 1,000-meter run, long jump, high jump, javelin and shot put. It’s a tough task but Elliott is looking forward to giving it a shot.
“I’ve been doing a lot of these events for a while and I’ve done alright in all of them. I think it would be really fun to try out.”
“I really enjoy the 400-meter and I’m fine with the javelin too. I think it’s a good test for anyone and just to try it out would be a lot of fun.”
