The Juan de Fuca midget B lacrosse team went undefeated at the 17th annual Matt Underwood box lacrosse tournament June 12 to 14 at Panorama Recreation Centre, beating Saanich 8-2 in the final to take home the big trophy.
Led by head coach Bryan Rhode, the team scored 40 goals, winning five-straight games during the three-day tournament. In their own end, goalie AJ Jensen and call-up goalie Adam Bland (from the Juan de Fuca bantam A team) had a strong showing between the pipes, only allowing 14 goals against.
The Matt Underwood tournament is held in honour of its name-sake, who was at the height of his game when he was diagnosed with leukaemia. Underwood went on to spearhead an awareness campaign to recruit Aboriginal bone-marrow donors, recruiting hundreds of donors in North America.
