Race fans were treated to amazing speeds at Smoke, Fire and Thunder

Five-second jet dragsters and funny cars topping 290 mph highlighted the weekend at Mission Raceway Park as Smoke Fire and Thunder entertained fans Friday through Sunday.

Richard Smith and Derek Snelson piloted jet funny cars and dragsters for the Darrin Bay multi-car team, with Smith earning the honours. In the funny car, he went 5.82 at 274 mph, which is the quickest run in western Canada for a jet funny car). In the dragster, he clocked a 5.49 at 292 mph. Snelson went 6.13 at 260 mph in the funny car and 5.51 at 288 mph in the dragster.

Ed Jones ended up to be the only wheelstander to run as Rick Marcum had a bad traffic accident just after he crossed the border into Canada on Friday. While uninjured, his truck and trailer were significantly damaged.

In the Bad Dog Shootout Pro Street portion of the race, Mission’s Jay Syvertsen won the final over Dawson Creek’s Dale Pedersen. Syversten ran a career best 6.07 at 243 mph on the way to victory. Aldergrove’s Steve Nicholson won the Outlaw 10.5 race against Calgary’s Mike Walterson with a 6.70 to 6.97.

Mission’s Kirk Lanz was the runner-up in Doorslammer. He lost to Langley’s Dale Grasdal. In funny car, Washington’s Kim Parker defeated her brother in-law Russ Parker when Russ had a red light in the final.
